Albany, NY - What does it mean to be an African American male in today’s world? Can I find opportunities to grow, learn, and love amidst the chaos? Can I be a great husband and father while battling the negatives that life throws my way? And perhaps the most personal question of all—can I overcome my own flaws to become a better version of myself?
These are questions I grapple with daily, and I know I’m not alone. Every day brings new challenges that could easily send me into a downward spiral if I let them. But I choose not to.
In a world full of obstacles that can derail success, I often sit and reflect on the things happening around me. Sometimes, it feels like the odds are stacked against us, that the world isn’t designed for us to succeed unless we have an unyielding drive to go after what we want. At every turn, something new threatens to block our path to possibility. So, I ask myself—what am I fighting for? What can I do differently to shape my destiny?
For me, I’m fighting for my son to know that he can achieve anything in this world if he works hard and earns it. I’m fighting to ensure my family is comfortable and that we cherish every moment together. In a world that constantly tells us that money is everything and that success is measured by millions, I believe that true success lies in the time we invest in our loved ones.
Now, more than ever, it’s crucial for us as men to be actively engaged with our families. Spending time with my son, going on date nights with my wife, and contributing to the management of our household—these are things they say African American males aren’t known for, but I know differently. I only win when my family comes first.
One thing I encourage everyone to do is to maintain a student mentality. I’m always seeking ways to improve myself without losing my identity. Regular self-checks and active listening are key. Never think that your success and the things you’ve worked hard for can’t be taken away. Success is not a one-time achievement; it’s a continuous process that requires a willingness to learn and adapt. I’m not always right, and this isn’t Burger King—I can’t have it my way all the time. But keeping that student mentality opens doors to countless opportunities.
So, I ask you, with all these questions on your mind, what are you fighting for? What can you change to make your path to success a little easier? I’m rooting for you and all your successes.
